Introducing

After leaving the Fleet Air Arm I was encouraged by Lee Miller to become more involved in photography.  Lee Miller instilled in me her enthusiasm for photography. She once told me how when she wanted to become a photographer she presented herself to Man Ray in the south of France and said, "I am your new pupil " to which Man replied " I don't have pupils, anyway tomorrow I am going to Biarritz." Lee retorted "Tomorrow I will see you in Biarritz."  Shortly after this I was fortunate enough to work on a film directed by Lee Miller's son Tony Penrose as a stills photographer and gofer and then spent a year working on Lee's archive. My first task was to retreive a suitcase full of negatives from Conde Nast, most of these images which had been shot for Vogue hadn't been seen since the 1940's. Rediscovering images that have since become iconic was a privilege.  I often feel Lee's presence when framing a photograph, as the first medium format camera I ever used was her old Rollei. Certainly Lee, and through her Man Ray have influenced my photography ever since.
